Montreal, February 19, 2013 - Citizens from the Ilnue community of Mashteuiatsh, the Comité pour la sauvegarde de la Ouiatchouan à Val-Jalbert (CSOV) and Paul Piché have demonstrated that social acceptability is not forthcoming in the project to build a hydroelectric power station on the Val-Jalbert historic and heritage site on Lac Saint-Jean.
Fondation Rivières welcomes the Marois government's decision to cancel six of the seven hydroelectric power plant projects in Quebec. In the case of Val-Jalbert on the Ouiatchouan River in the Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean region, Fondation Rivières is also calling for the cancellation of the project, which is clearly unjustified not only in terms of cost, but also in terms of its environmental, social and tourist consequences.
Fondation Rivières was present on Tuesday, January 22, 2013 at the first session of public hearings on the small power plant project on the Sainte-Anne-du-Nord River in Saint-Joachim, in the Quebec region. Representatives of the organization asked a considerable number of questions for a total of fourteen.
Fondation Rivières estimates that Hydro-Québec will incur annual losses of over 5 M$/year, or 80 M$ (present value) over the 20 years of the contract signed with the developer of the Val-Jalbert hydroelectric project, Société de l'énergie communautaire du Lac-Saint-Jean.
