Press release - On February 1, the Montreal Port Authority (MPA) unveiled details of its plans to build a marine terminal in Contrecoeur. The project would occupy 4 km of natural shoreline on the St. Lawrence River, close to a residential area of Verchères in the middle of the countryside, facing the park-like Île Bouchard. The first phase calls for a 675-meter wharf and a transit capacity of 1.15 million containers per year. Fondation Rivières is concerned about this project, given the scale of the apprehended impacts and its incompatibility with the rural, agricultural and tourist uses surrounding the area selected by APM.
