PRESS RELEASE
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Montreal, September 30, 2015 – The population has the right to obtain a minimum of adequate explanations when the time comes to authorize work that causes significant pollution, such as the discharge of untreated wastewater directly into the environment. Citizens and users must then be adequately alerted and security measures must be put in place.
In the case of the overflow of 8 million cubic meters of wastewater into the St. Lawrence River, for at least a week, the City failed in its task by not being able to provide intelligible explanations.
Fondation Rivières therefore sent a request for access to information to the Ministry of Sustainable Development, Environment and the Fight against Climate Change (MDDELCC) to obtain this information.
The Fondation Rivières, which monitors the performance of several sanitation systems on certain rivers, emphasizes that wastewater overflows into waterways constitute an underestimated and little-known problem in Quebec.
