When all the rivers are harnessed and the land ravaged, what will be left of us?

Quebec has a territory and a network of rivers that are uniquely rich in the world. Let's put an end to anarchic economic development at the expense of biodiversity. Visit 25 last great wild rivers are jewels to be cherished, a heritage of humanity. Let's protect them, there's still time.

Letter to Mr. François Legault, Premier of Quebec, and
Mr. Pierre Fitzgibbon, Minister of the Economy, Innovation and Energy and Minister responsible for Regional Economic Development

When all the rivers are harnessed, what will be left of us?

Good morning, Mr. Fitzgibbon and Mr. Legault,

I've just discovered the list of 25 wild rivers at risk of hydroelectric development. This list, drawn up by Fondation Rivières, made me realize that there are very few of these great wild rivers with large flows left, which represent a heritage for mankind.

It's worrying:

that your government has opted for a massive increase in all forms of electricity production, including the construction of new dams.

that your government is seeking to attract industrial investment with the promise of low-cost electricity, which we don't have.

that your government has no strategy for energy sobriety and that your targets for energy savings are ridiculously low.

that your government is entrusting large industries like TES Canada with the task of developing their own wind farms on the territory, without any overall plan, as if the territory belonged to them.

to note that more and more citizens are rejecting all wind power projects, even though we need them for decarbonization.

Last year, you promised to hold a wide-ranging public debate with Quebec society and Aboriginal communities. It's not too late to launch such a debate. It's urgent.

We look forward to hearing from you, Mr. Prime Minister, Mr. Minister, on your intentions in this regard.
