We finally discovered the pot aux roses. During a meeting with Hydro-Qu\u00e9bec employees, Michael Sabia, CEO of the state-owned company, said that Hydro-Qu\u00e9bec rates will have to be increased. Prime Minister Fran\u00e7ois Legault tried to be reassuring by saying that<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lapresse.ca\/actualites\/politique\/2023-10-25\/hausse-importante-des-tarifs-d-hydro-quebec\/on-ne-fera-jamais-ca-dit-legault.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">it will \u201cnever\u201d increase electricity prices beyond inflation or a ceiling of 3 %<\/a>. The fact that he does not want to commit after 2025 is cause for concern.<\/p><p>Especially since Michael Sabia&#039;s assertion comes at a time when the government is preparing a major bill that will change the way the energy sector works in Quebec. The social debate on energy, which the Coalition Avenir Qu\u00e9bec (CAQ) was committed to holding, did not take place.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4134954 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"4134954\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Electricity, a business opportunity?<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7868055 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"7868055\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>According to Michael Sabia, electricity rates must be revised upwards \u201cto better reflect the reality that electricity has now become a valuable asset\u201d. Obviously, in a context where companies want to green their image by moving away from fossil fuels, Hydro-Qu\u00e9bec&#039;s \u201cclean\u201d energy has great value. We are currently seeing an explosion in demand for hydroelectricity from energy-intensive companies.<\/p><p>The CEO of Hydro-Qu\u00e9bec and the Minister of Energy (who is also Minister of the Economy, remember) seem to see the energy transition as a simple business opportunity. Is it really necessary to explain to them that before being a valuable asset, electricity is an essential service?<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2a1ea59 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"2a1ea59\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Are the new supplies really necessary?<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-38e0435 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"38e0435\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>For the CEO of Hydro-Qu\u00e9bec, the rate increases are also justified by the increase in electricity production. Many figures have circulated on this subject. In 2022, Hydro-Qu\u00e9bec estimated Quebec&#039;s additional energy needs at 100 terawatt-hours (TWh) to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. Firstly because we will not achieve our greenhouse gas reduction targets and secondly because we will pay for these political choices through our electricity bills.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9e8c03f elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"9e8c03f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h4 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Political targets<\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-71eeb0a elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"71eeb0a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>These targets are therefore the responsibility of the State and not that of Hydro-Qu\u00e9bec&#039;s residential customers. Reducing greenhouse gases is beneficial for all of society. The energy transition must be financed by the entire population and not only by Hydro-Qu\u00e9bec&#039;s residential consumers.<\/p><p>Electricity rates are the same for everyone, regardless of income. Using electricity rates to finance the transition is a form of regressive taxation (unlike taxes). It also means placing an unfair proportion of the costs on the most vulnerable households.<\/p><p>It is important to remember that in Quebec, one person in seven experiences difficulty in having the energy necessary in their home to satisfy their basic needs or achieves this to the detriment of other essential needs, such as eating. The government must stop turning a blind eye to the problems of access to energy experienced by hundreds of thousands of people in Quebec.<\/p><p>Hydro-Qu\u00e9bec&#039;s primary mission, which was to provide electricity to Quebecers at a fair price, is well and truly behind us.
