{"id":13309,"date":"2019-10-30T16:44:30","date_gmt":"2019-10-30T20:44:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/fondationrivieres.org\/?p=13309"},"modified":"2022-10-26T13:59:19","modified_gmt":"2022-10-26T17:59:19","slug":"non-a-un-nouvel-energie-est-gazier-signez-la-petition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fondationrivieres.org\/en\/non-a-un-nouvel-energie-est-gazier-signez-la-petition\/","title":{"rendered":"No to a new gas \u201cEnergy East\u201d: sign the petition!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The GNL Qu\u00e9bec company is proposing the construction of a\u00a0<strong>750 km gas pipeline named\u00a0<em>Gazoduq<\/em><\/strong>, of a\u00a0<strong>gas liquefaction plant<\/strong>\u00a0named\u00a0<em>Energy Saguenay<\/em>\u00a0and a<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>maritime export terminal for super-methane tankers which would sail on the Saguenay. This vast project aims <strong>to export fossil gas from Western Canada <\/strong>to international markets, via Abitibi and T\u00e9miscamingue, Haute-Mauricie, Lac-Saint-Jean, Saguenay, the Saguenay Fjord and the Saint-Laurent.<\/p>\n<p>This project <strong>would exacerbate the climate crisis,<\/strong>\u00a0because it would open new markets for North American fossil gas, particularly shale gas. On its own, it would generate\u00a0<strong>7.8 million tonnes of greenhouse gases (GHG) per year, <\/strong>enough to cancel out Quebec&#039;s GHG reduction efforts.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-13313 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/fondationrivieres.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/corridor-etude-GNL.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"406\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This project would have major impacts on the natural environments and biodiversity of Quebec. Let us just think of the vast scar that would be created on the territory, the waterways crossed, the landscape of the disfigured fjord or the threats affecting the beluga and other mammals of the river. And all this for whose benefit?<\/p>\n<p>The population already subsidizes the financing of the fossil fuel industry, such projects may be unprofitable in themselves. <strong>Quebec must not be complicit in this new fossil gas project\u00a0<\/strong>which will last for 50 years, far from an energy transition, contrary to what the promoter argues.<\/p>\n<p>This project also requires 550 MW of discounted electricity from Hydro-Qu\u00e9bec for gas liquefaction.
