low gradients. As a result, huge swathes of territory would have to be flooded if we wanted to obtain enough power to make it worthwhile. A perverse effect of such flooding would be to accelerate the thawing process of the permafrost, which contains a lot of frozen organic matter. Once thawed and released into the atmosphere, this matter would be released in the form of methane, a powerful greenhouse gas. It's the equivalent of a veritable <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bombe_carbone\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">climate bomb<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It would be completely irresponsible to consider the development of such areas, which could accelerate the release of very large quantities of greenhouse gases in the event of flooding.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What's more, it would be exorbitantly expensive to get there, given the great distance and lack of road access. 400;\">Hydro-Qu\u00e9bec once wanted to divert the exceptional Nastapoka River, which runs 402 km and constitutes <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one of the largest rivers in Northern Quebec, with a watershed covering 13,400 km<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This river, t<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ributary on the east coast of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Baie_d%27Hudson\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hudson Bay, was<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> be diverted <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to James Bay's Grande-Baleine River, a project abandoned in 1994 in the process of creating the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/snapquebec.org\/qui-sommes-nous\/nos-succes\/le-parc-national-tursujuq-et-la-riviere-nastapoka\/#:~:text=Le%20parc%20national%20Tursujuq%20assure,de%20saumons%20de%20l&#039;Atlantique.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Park <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tursujuq<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lac_Tasiujaq\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">habitat is unique<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the world, home to beluga whales, freshwater seals and Atlantic salmon at its mouth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rivi\u00e8re \u00e0 la Baleine is also exceptional. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a tributary of the southern shore of Ungava Bay. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/toponymie.gouv.qc.ca\/ct\/ToposWeb\/Fiche.aspx?no_seq=3223\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Naniwau Sipi<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or Naniwausipi, is the Naskapi name for the Whale River. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Qikirtajuaq Island, 17.3 km long, obstructs the mouth of the Rivi\u00e8re \u00e0 la Baleine, extending up to 20.2 km at low tide due to its long beaches. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At its mouth is a summer concentration area for beluga whales. Protecting this river is a matter of course, given its great ecological value. <\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3187d37 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"3187d37\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\" data-settings=\"{&quot;jet_parallax_layout_list&quot;:[]}\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-908a4e9 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"908a4e9\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">The Battle of the Cree<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2b60a8a elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"2b60a8a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>We have\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/lactualite.com\/societe\/baie-james-le-chantier-qui-a-tout-change-pour-le-quebec\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">already flooded vast territories<\/a>\u00a0and Hydro-Qu\u00e9bec's last attempt to build a hydroelectric plant there, the Grande-Baleine project, was cancelled in 1994.<a href=\"https:\/\/ici.radio-canada.ca\/nouvelle\/1814427\/autochtones-environnement-droits-quebec-archives\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0in the face of opposition from Cree and Inuit villagers<\/a>.
