400;\">It's on the territory of the Innu communities of the C\u00f4te-Nord that we find the rivers of greatest interest to Hydro-Qu\u00e9bec. There are seven major endangered rivers on the C\u00f4te Nord, including the Rivi\u00e8re du <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/macotenord.com\/la-fondation-rivieres-mobilise-la-population-contre-les-projets-de-barrages-en-basse-cote-nord\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Little Mecatina<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which is currently being <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/fondationrivieres.org\/en\/etude-potentiel-hydroelectrique-la-riviere-du-petit-mecatina-injustifiee\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a preliminary study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on hydroelectric potential by Hydro-Qu\u00e9bec. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the wake of the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/fondationrivieres.org\/en\/inauguration-complexe-la-romaine\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">La Romaine complex opens in April 2023<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hydro-Qu\u00e9bec reiterated its intention to develop<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ici.radio-canada.ca\/espaces-autochtones\/2012073\/unamen-shipu-barrage-petit-mecatina-hydro-quebec\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> new dams on the North Shore<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with the Petit M\u00e9catina river. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Located on the border of Labrador, the Petit Mecatina River flows into the St. Lawrence River between Natashquan and Blanc-Sablon, and has its source in Labrador. The government of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lapresse.ca\/affaires\/entreprises\/2023-04-04\/projet-hydroelectrique-de-la-riviere-petit-mecatina\/hydro-quebec-se-remet-en-marche.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">says<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to develop dams in the area, with plans to build power plants with a potential of 1,200 MW on the river after the end of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/fondationrivieres.org\/en\/inauguration-complexe-la-romaine\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Romaine project<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3918d57 elementor-align-center representatives of the aboriginal and non-aboriginal communities of the Lower North Shore. <a href=\"https:\/\/ici.radio-canada.ca\/nouvelle\/2042144\/route-centrale-hydroelectrique-developpement-hydro\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">No road, no dam<\/a>the elected representatives of these isolated regions, which are experiencing <a href=\"https:\/\/ici.radio-canada.ca\/nouvelle\/1773637\/habitation-logement-premiere-nations-autochtone-penurie\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">housing crisis<\/a> with the prospect of economic prosperity.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element construction of dams on 5 other rivers on the North Coast. For the government, dams are the primary reason for extending the road. This road is highly coveted by the private sector, which sees an opportunity to develop hydrogen and wind power on the North Shore. This road must not be built to meet Hydro-Qu\u00e9bec's energy needs, or to meet the energy requirements of its customers. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/fondationrivieres.org\/en\/vendre-vent-tuer-hydro-quebec-lautel-prive\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">private-sector industrial dreams<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The extension of Highway 138 should not come at the price of sacrificing rivers, but first and foremost for the well-being of local communities, the vast majority of whom want this road.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The construction of this road represents a major technical challenge, and will entail astronomical costs due to the steepness of the North Shore and the instability of the soil at certain points on the banks of the St. Lawrence River, over rivers and inlets that need to be spanned. This fragmentation of the territory contributes to the loss of biodiversity in the region through human predation, facilitated by access to new hunting and fishing grounds. Negotiations will be highly complex, as the communities have been greatly affected <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">during the development of the Manic complex in 1965, when they had only received <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ledevoir.com\/opinion\/idees\/535077\/hydroelectricite-le-vrai-scandale-sur-la-cote-nord\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">derisory compensation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in exchange for the destruction of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ledevoir.com\/opinion\/idees\/623118\/reconciliation-la-cour-supreme-et-manic-5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">their territory<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> ancestral lands. The MRC and the Conseil des Innus d'Ekuanitshit consider themselves guardians of the river. Even though it's closed by a dam just off Route 138, we've included it in the list of great wild rivers, because everything else is untouched.
