Image tirée du film La nouvelle Rupert

A documentary filmed on the Rupert River after its diversion

Before the construction of the dam, Rupert was a “grande dame”; now it flows little more than a large stream. Around this James Bay river, Hydro-Québec workers and Crees live together. Without ever falling into simplism or activism, Nicolas Renaud listens to testimonies, surveys the territory at its most concrete, explores its history at its most profound. Through extremely fine editing work, he captures the complexity of power relations; thanks to sensitive portraits and superb observational sequences, he reveals the human issues behind ecological upheavals. A moving story of identity takes shape, and the investigation gives way to the lyricism of the place.
